Go Set A Watchman (2015) by Harper Lee           This was first posted July 16, 2015.

I read this book in two days. It takes a number of chapters before you “really get into the book”. Atticus Finch is presented as a man in his 70’s still living in Maycomb, County, located in the South. One thinks of Atticus Finch in the movie version of To Kill A Mockingbird portrayed by Gregory Peck. I do not think that the book or the movie of To Kill A Mockingbird can be improved.

Should this 2nd book have been published? I have to think about that, not sure of the answer.
Should you READ this book? 100% YES-People will be talking about it and you should be able to give your informed opinion about it.
This book is an interesting book to read. You will find some not very nice surprises and you will see that SCOUT (Jean Louise) is now a 26 year old young woman. Atticus Finch is still a very interesting character in this book. You will read about Atticus’s sister Alexandra and his brother Dr. Finch. You will read about a NEW character named Henry “Hank” Clinton a childhood friend of Scout and Jem.

The last few chapters ARE VERY INTERESTING.

It will be interesting to read the opinions of others after they have read this book (not just the “experts” on TV).

To the question-Should this 2nd novel (Watchman) have been published in 2015?

My final answer has not been decided at this time.   I am leaning toward the answer of—It would have been better not to publish this 2nd novel.

Will Watchman be used in schools like Mockingbird has been for many years?   The answer is most likely NO.

In defense of the 2nd novel, it gives a much more realistic look at race relations in Alabama (and the entire U. S.) in the 1930’s and 1950’s. It does not take away from the fact that Atticus was willing to defend Tom Robinson who was falsely accused of a very serious crime especially in the South (or the North for that matter).   It does take away some of the saintly glow of Atticus’s character in To Kill A Mockingbird but does not completely destroy his image of standing up for the law and what can be done during a certain time period.

If YOU do read the book, we would be interested in your views and opinions.
