In The Garden Of Beasts (2011) By Erik Larson BOOK REVIEW
This is a non-fiction book. It mainly deals with Germany in 1933 and 1934. The main characters (real people) are the American Ambassador to Germany William E. Dodd and his daughter Martha. Mr. Dodd is portrayed as a down to earth history professor who becomes the Ambassador to Nazi Germany. His daughter Martha is portrayed as a sexually active young woman. She has affairs with a NUMBER of men-including top Nazis. It takes sometime before the Dodd’s realize how bad conditions are under Nazi rule in Germany. The top Nazis like Hitler and Goring are treated too lightly-in a benign way. I have never heard Goring referred to as moderate before. It is an interesting book. I do not know how accurate that it is. The book does give an interesting case study of Ambassador Dodd.
MY RATING: 8 This is a hard book to give a rating to. It is an interesting read.
